Meridia Weight Loss Injury

Maybe you saw the attractive, positive commercials urging you to buy Meridia and lose weight. Or maybe you have run into a pop-up ad on the web, showing you how to buy Meridia online. Chances are you have heard of the Meridia diet pill, but are you aware of the side effects of Meridia?

Since its introduction in the United States in 1998, the diet drug Meridia (sibutramine) has been linked to high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, heart arrhythmia, heart attacks, dilated cardiomyopathy, mental impairments, heart disease, stroke, seizure, and 19 deaths. The Italian government withdrew the drug in March after two deaths there, and other European countries are currently reviewing sibutramine.

Besides the health risks, Meridia’s weight loss effectiveness is marginal. In fact, people who took the standard dose lost only six and a half pounds (yearly average) more than those taking a placebo. According to Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, “Not only does this drug contribute to major cardiovascular problems, but its effectiveness in lowering obesity is meager. The FDA is aware of this and must take it off the market.”

There is evidence that the Food and Drug Administration had concerns about Meridia before its approval. Meridia is marketed by Abbott Laboratories and was the first diet drug approved after the FDA banned Fen-Phen and Redux in 1997. Now the FDA is concerned about the many reports of Meridia’s side effects and is conducting its own investigation of the drug. Good news, but, as Dr. Wolfe says, “There is a 10- to 100-fold underreporting of adverse events. What gets reported to the FDA is just a tiny fraction of what is going on.” It is unclear how many reactions to Meridia are going unreported. Public Citizen has drafted a petition to the FDA, requesting the immediate removal of Meridia from the market.
